This review concerns the International Handbook of Occupational Therapy Interventions.
New York: Springer 2009 http://www.springer.com/medicine/physical/book/978-0-387-75423-9 Editor: Ingrid Söderback.
I strongly recommend the Handbook as an excellent resource for new-examined colleagues, experienced clinicians for use in everyday practice and for students to be used as a primary source during field studies.
The comprehensive Handbook with its world-wide perspective is what I am using mostly in my work. It is user friendly and easy to read. As a clinician, specialized in medical rehabilitation, I recognize myself throughout all 58 chapters. The structure of the Handbook is natural and logical.
The Handbook is innovative: it contains a new framework illustrating occupational therapists’ four main roles and four main goals of occupational therapy: to manage adaptations, teach for (re)learning, enable occupations for recovery, and promote health and wellness. This new way of identifying occupational therapy is illustrated by case descriptions. It contains systematic descriptions of more than 50 commonly-used occupational therapy interventions – all based on research. The descriptions of these interventions are easy to apply to clinical applications and their level of evidence is outlined. The Handbook is based on scientific and an overview of the basic of occupational therapy theory is described.
